Malaysia’s eGames Festival Moves to Its Climax; HotShotz 2017 Happening this Weekend

HotShotz is the latest in increasing number of events catering to the booming eGames ecosystem in the country.

After 5 rounds of fierce qualifiers hosted by 5 different universities, Malaysia’s eGames festival, HotShotz 2017, is now gearing up for its grand finale where over 250 finalists, all amateurs, from 7 game titles will come together on July 22-23 to compete to be the winners and hopefully move on to be the next international eSports stars from Malaysia.

Sony Interactive Entertainment Singapore (SIES), as the Console Games Partner provided 25 PS4 consoles for HotShotz 2017 while Acer provided 30 gaming PCs and 20 gaming monitors, as the Main Sponsor.

Meanwhile, encouraged by the number of participants and level of interest that HotShotz 2017 has garnered so far, Digital News Asia founder, Karamjit Singh said, “we would like to continue to play a key role in speeding up the pace of development of Malaysia’s eGames ecosystem by organising more events like HotShotz.”

While there is no data yet on the entire Malaysian eGames, ecosystem, according to estimates, the Malaysian video games market was worth RM1.26 billion (US$293 million) in 2015. This is an increase of +30.9% from 2014, making Malaysia the 26th largest games market in the world and the third largest in Southeast Asia.

Malaysia is also home to a mixture of around 50 international studios, local outsourcing studios and independent studios. Among them are Codemasters Malaysian Studio which handles the artwork for some of their biggest titles including DiRT 4, GRID 2, Micro Machines World series and F1 2017.

Streamline Studios, an independent Dutch outsourcing and game developing studio has also set-up a studio right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The company has been providing digital content outsourcing services for AAA and mobile titles for 15 years including several platinum selling hits like Gears of War, Unreal Tournament and Ghost Recon. The Malaysian team also worked on franchises such as Street Fighter V and Final Fantasy XV.

All the big games started out small and here, through the showcase presenter, MDEC, 10 independent game developers will be showing their games for all to play. Could one of them become the next big thing in the gaming industry?

Cosplay Competition

Seen as very much at the periphery of the gaming ecosystem, nonetheless it was Cosplay players, many of them gamers themselves, who helped take the fantasy characters of the gaming world into the real and, indirectly, helped create a sense of excitement and reality around the games.  Watch out for the cosplay workshop as well where you will get tips on how to portray your favourite gaming world character.

PC Modding

You have heard of how some people love to modify their cars, well, meet the geek equivalents and be blown away by how far some will go to turbo charge their machines. There will also be a hands on area where visitors can assemble their own dream gaming machine.

VR Showcase

VR news has been making headlines with a Malaysian games developer turned VR player raising some funding from 500 Startups last week. Yet another key player in the Malaysian VR scene is VR Lab Sdn Bhd and as the VR Partner with the largest booth space, they will be ensuring that HotShotz visitors get to experience what the world of VR is actually like.
