The Intel Core i7 8700K is set to be launched on 5th October, but we are already getting peeks at its performance thanks to some generous leaks. The latest leak see an engineering sample hit 5.0 GHz.

Intel Core i7 8700K goes all the way to 5.0 GHz; scores 5% higher in CPU-Z than a stock AMD Ryzen 1700X! 32

At 5.0 GHz, the overclocked Intel Core i7 8700K wallops the stock AMD Ryzen 7 1700X with around 5% higher scores in CPU-Z’s benchmark despite featuring less processing threads (12 vs 16). Meanwhile in Cinebench we see it hit 213 cb in the single-core and 1591 cb in the multi-core benchmarks. We have previously seen the Intel Core i7 8700K with a milder overclock beat a stock AMD Ryzen 7 1700, and a bigger overclock just sees Intel rubbing their dominance all over AMD’s face. There was no mention of the cooling used though.

With the Intel Core i7 8700K rumored to be priced around the previous generation’s prices, consumers will in a way be getting two cores free from Intel. However, those coming from the Z270 platform will need a new motherboard, since the Coffee Lake CPUs require the upcoming Z370 motherboards to work, despite featuring a similar socket.
