We may have lambasted Intel for resting on their laurels for far too long, resulting in the Intel CPUs being destroyed in multi-threaded performance charts and value-for-money. Luckily, Intel still has a few tricks up its sleeves to keep the CPU game interesting. After bumping up the core counts across their entire Core i-series of CPUs, they are now looking a lot more attractive against AMD’s offerings. And these leaked benchmarks show just how much better they are against yesteryear’s Kaby Lake CPUs.

Against the Core i7 7700K, the Core i7 8700K offers up to 47% improvements in SiSoft Sandra benchmarks with the full breakdown as below:

Intel Core i7 8700K Intel Core i7 7700K Difference
217.98 GOPS Processor Arithmetic 149.99 GOPS 45%
658.57 Mpix/s Processor Multi-Media 447.76 Mpix/s 47%
10.47 GB/s Processor Cryptography 9.34 GB/s 12%
61.41 GFLOPS Scientific Analysis (Single Precision) 48.51 GFLOPS 26%
32.11 GFLOPS Scientific Analysis (Double Precision) 24.40 GFLOPS 32%

The Core i5 8400 vs the Core i5 7600K posts an even bigger jump, promising up to 50% extra performance. And we aren’t even talking about the Core i5 8600K which can be overclocked to further widen the gap.

Intel Core i5 8400 Intel Core i5 7600K Difference
145.05 GOPS Processor Arithmetic 103.66 GOPS 40%
420.54 Mpix/s Processor Multi-Media 279.69 Mpix/s 50%
9.78 GB/s Processor Cryptography 8.45 GB/s 14%
71.68 GFLOPS Scientific Analysis (Single Precision) 51.38 GFLOPS 39%
31.35 GFLOPS Scientific Analysis (Double Precision) 26.72 GFLOPS 17%

Now to make things more interesting, let’s put the Intel Core i5 8400 against the Intel Core i7 7700K to find out how much of an upgrade are we looking at, as the Core i5 lose out on two processing threads but features two extra physical cores.

Intel Core i5 8400 Intel Core i7 7700K Difference
145.05 GOPS Processor Arithmetic 149.99 GOPS -3.3%
420.54 Mpix/s Processor Multi-Media 447.76 Mpix/s -6.1%
9.78 GB/s Processor Cryptography 9.34 GB/s 4.7%
71.68 GFLOPS Scientific Analysis (Single Precision) 48.51 GFLOPS 48%
31.35 GFLOPS Scientific Analysis (Double Precision) 24.40 GFLOPS 28%

With the above numbers, I can’t wait to see an overclocked Core i5 8600K go head to head against a Core i7 7700K to see how much we will gain in terms of performance. For that, we will need to wait for Intel to announce availability of the Coffee Lake CPUs which is expected to happen sometime in October 2017.

Pokdepinion: If Intel really prices the 8th Generation Intel Core i-series desktop CPUs at the same price points of the 7th Generation CPUs, then Intel could easily redominate the CPU market, unless enthusiasts decide to hop onto the AM4 platform for AMD’s renowned socket longevity.
