Malaysia set on path to be SEA’s gaming industry powerhouse

At the recent LEVEL UP KL BIZ, several high profile entities in the gaming industry announced their plans and partnerships here in Malaysia. Among them are Sony Interactive Entertainment, Larian Studios, Streamline Media Group, Kurechii and Media Prima Digital.

The biggest announcement probably has to be the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia’s announcement that it is partnering with Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SIE WWS) to establish their first studio in SEA here in Malaysia. The partnership will propel Malaysia’s status as a games development hub as SIE WWS will provide art and animation services to develop PlayStation exclusive titles from Malaysia.

Larian Studio, which has a pretty Malaysian name for a Belgian-based games development company, announced that they will start their SEA expansion here in Malaysia. They have also revealed that they will be harnessing local talents in their upcoming game project developments.

Streamline Media Group also had a big announcement to make. Their upcoming title Bake ‘n Switch has entered early access on Steam. The game also won Game of the Year, Outstanding Gameplay and Visual Excellence at Reboot Red. They announced Day Zero too, a quality assurance and localization division of Streamline Media Group which will work together with the other Streamline divisions.

Meanwhile local game development company Kurechii announced that they have published Kings League II on Apple Arcade, marking a first for Malaysia.

As a whole, Malaysia’s digital creative content industry has churned out 149 IP titles, generating RM7.6 billion revenue and export sales of 1.3 billion with a global reach to over 120 countries.
