The MediaTek Helio G90 series were pretty good although it was only featured in one smartphone here in Malaysia. The Helio G80 just announced today might be more popular, considering it targets a more wallet-friendly price range than the Helio G90.

In terms of hardware, the MediaTek Helio G80 packs eight cores clocked at up to 2.0 GHz in a 2+6 big.LITTLE configuration. While the core count is similar, the Helio G80 uses Cortex-A75 cores, while the Helio G90 comes with Cortex-A76 cores. Meanwhile the GPU configuration is also very different, with the Helio G80’s Mali-G52MP2 GPU a far cry from the Helio G90’s Mali-G76MP4.

There’s also the rather unfortunate storage limitation, with the Helio G80 only supporting eMMC 5.1 storage. The photography chops here are pretty impressive too, with hardware support to capture 48MP images @ 30 fps. There’s no support for 4K video recording though, with it limited to 2K30 or 1080p60 videos.

MediaTek Helio G80 Specs

  • 2 x Cortex-A75 @ 2.0 GHz + 6 x Cortex-A55 @ 1.8 GHz
  • Mali-G52MP2 @ 950 MHz
  • Support up to 8GB LPDDR4x @ 1800 MHz
  • Support for eMMC 5.1 storage
  • Support 48MP / 16MP dual camera @ 30 fps capture
  • 2K30 or 1080p60 video recording
  • Cat 7 DL, Cat 13 UL (300 Mbps down, 150 Mbps up)
  • 12nm FinFET

Considering that the MediaTek Helio G80 will probably see itself in smartphones priced around the RM700~900 range, where I don’t think a lack of 4K video recording capabilities that will be a major issue. MediaTek now has a pretty nice lineup of chipsets in the Helio G-series, but whether OEMs would pick them over the more popular Snapdragon remains to be seen.

Thus far, the only major device we have seen pick MediaTek’s offering over Qualcomm’s is the Redmi Note 8 Pro, and that was a pretty impressive device in its own right. Meanwhile the lower-end Helio G70 will be featured in the realme C3. MediaTek is focusing on the growing mobile gaming segment, so we might see more designs sporting the Helio G-series chipsets in the coming months as the gaming smartphone market is seriously booming.
