We knew about Microsoft’s plans to bring console-quality gaming to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. They plan on doing so via a cloud-streaming service which they are currently working on called Project xCloud. But of course, no good gaming experience can come without good controllers.

With that being the case, Microsoft has created and tested some prototypes of Xbox controllers which were designed for use with smartphones and tablets. According to a research paper on Windows Central. it noted on how big mobile gaming has become, as well as solutions on how games are being played on that platform.

It noted on some issues that were faced by playing purely on touchscreen, and even praised the likes of the Nintendo Switch and PSP for the utilization of physical joysticks and buttons. This would seem to indicate the goal of the research paper and thus lead to the creation of the prototype Xbox controllers.

It was mentioned that Microsoft built the prototypes out of foam and then had them 3D printed, based on conceptual renders. The took place way back in 2014, but it seems Microsoft Research has resurfaced their efforts recently, noting the recent success of the Nintendo Switch.

This is by no means an indication that it will be come a fully-fledged product that anyone can buy anytime soon. But it does give us an indication as to how Microsoft is planning to go about their Project xCloud streaming service to bring console-quality gaming to the mobile gaming space. For now, only time will tell.

Pokdepinion: I’ve always loved Xbox controllers. Sure, they’re kinda big but they’re also very comfortable to use. Though at this day and age, I’d be stuck between choosing that or the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller if I could choose one for all platforms.
