Both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X have, without a doubt, powerful hardware. It would be interesting to see if it can truly play games at 8K resolution, but it seems that it should be able to do 4K gaming with relative ease. However, NVIDIA claims that there is already a laptop that is already more powerful than two the next-gen consoles.

The laptop in mind is said to be the upcoming Lenovo Y740, which is said to be using the NVIDIA RTX 2080 Max-Q GPU and is more efficient than the PS5 and Xbox Series X. The GPU is said to be capable of theoretical performances of 12.89 TeraFlops. In comparison, the Xbox Series X is expected to ofer 12 TeraFlops, if rumours are accurate.

It isn’t a surprise to see NVIDIA giving statements like this, given that both consoles are powered by competitor, AMD. As you may know by now, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X are powered by a custom CPU based on the Zen 2 architecture, and a custom AMD Navi GPU.

Would the laptop be capable of performing on the same level, if not better, than both the PS5 and Xbox Series X? The short answer is no. Console games are generally more optimized for the platform so it can run far better than on PC with the same hardware. Therefore, even if it is more powerful, it wouldn’t mean better performance.

NVIDIA is no stranger to the console world however. In the current generation, the Nintendo Switch is powered by the NVIDIA Tegra chipsets. It may not be as powerful as its current gen competitors but Nintendo isn’t competing purely on hardware strength.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q is expected to be no slouch, that’s for sure. We doubt that it would match up to what the consoles can provide but we can’t wait to see how well it performs first hand when it’s out.
