Following the launch of the R9 Fury from the Red camp, NVIDIA’s AIB partners are silently reducing the prices of the GTX 980 and GTX 980 Ti cards by $20 (RM 75.85). The GTX 980 sees a price drop from $499 to $479 while the 980 Ti falls from $649 to $629. This is clearly a move to apply more pressure on AMD with the GTX 980 Ti now being just that bit more affordable than the AMD R9 Fury X.

The GTX 980 price drop may not make a big difference to AMD’s sales but the GTX 980 Ti’s new pricing will since the GTX 980 Ti and R9 Fury X are neck to neck in most benchmarks. We will see how AMD responds as AMD might not be able to respond with a price reduction of their own given the new HBM technology used in their cards.

Do note however that while the MSRP has dropped, it doesn’t mean that all GTX 980 and 980 Ti will drop the same amount.

Pokdepinion: We think price drops for competition’s sake is always good, but innovation is definitely better. We can see that NVIDIA is a little afraid of AMD stealing their sales and has resorted to reducing the prices of their cards to look better from a price-performance standpoint.  However, our Malaysian market rarely follows these price drops closely and the prices for the cards may still be unchanged for some time.
