NVIDIA GTX 1080 to feature GP104 and GDDR5X memory?

Every enthusiast out there is waiting for the next-gen cards from both AMD and NVIDIA. We know Pascal will be based on the TSMC 16 nm FinFET manufacturing process and utilize either HBM2 or GDDR5X memory. According to this rumor from BenchLife, the GTX 1080 based on Pascal will pack 8GB of GDDR5X memory instead of the much faster HBM2 memory. The GTX 1080 will sport the GP104 GPU, which is in line with the previous naming convention, so no surprise there. Actually, the use of GDDR5X isn’t that shocking either, as we know that AMD has priority to HBM2 production capacity. However Samsung has already begun mass producing HBM2 modules, and I doubt AMD has priority to that pool as well. The rumor also mentions that only the “Big Pascal” (GP100) will feature HBM2 memory.

The GTX 1080 will allegedly have DisplayPort x2, HDMI x1 and DVI x1 ports, and only a single 8-pin PCIe power connector, which means a maximum TDP of below 225W. If the rumor is to be trusted, the GTX 1080 will be revealed on May 27th, 4 days before Computex, with sales set to start in July.

Pokdepinion: This rumor seems way more detailed than the usual “rumors” that we see floating around on the internet. I do hope we can see HBM2 in more affordable cards, rather than just the flagship GP100 cards. If this is true, AMD may finally regain the lead as they are more experienced with HBM technology and should release more cards with the technology.
