NVIDIA has quietly disabled overclocking their mobile GPUs in their latest driver update (version 347.29), claiming that mobile GPUs were never meant to be overclocked and it was enabled by accident. This issue was found when it was found that after updating to the latest driver, their clocks dropped back to stock and they found that their GTX900Ms overclocking function was disabled. Here is a reply by one of their representatives on NVIDIA Geforce Forums:

Unfortunately GeForce notebooks were not designed to support overclocking. Overclocking is by no means a trivial feature, and depends on thoughtful design of thermal, electrical, and other considerations. By overclocking a notebook, a user risks serious damage to the system that could result in non-functional systems, reduced notebook life, or many other effects.

There was a bug introduced into our drivers which enabled some systems to overclock. This was fixed in a recent update. Our intent was not to remove features from GeForce notebooks, but rather to safeguard systems from operating outside design limits. – ManuelG

Maxwell has low operating temperatures and low power consumption which makes it a very good candidate for overclocking. This move limits the maximum performance the mobile GPUs may achieve. I believe that this limit is imposed simply to widen the difference between the different models.

After this article on overclocking it does seem rather hypocritical of NVIDIA right?
