NVIDIA PhysX was a technology which actually needed a second graphics card to handle. In newer cards, PhysX can be easily handled by a single NVIDIA card, delivering a more immersive graphics experience. Of course, NVIDIA is opening up PhysX not only for gaming applications, but also a wide plethora of implementations which can take advantage of physics simulation.

PhysX 4.0 is expected to benefit researchers in the fields of AI and robotics. NVIDIA also expects to help game developers reduce the time needed to animate physics interactions which look believable. Overall, PhysX is more than just an API for gaming, but also for anything where physics is an important aspect.

Now with it open source, game developers and researchers can take advantage of the API, which is now even more advanced in its iteration, PhysX 4.0. What do you think of NVIDIA’s interest in making their once proprietary API open source now? Is it a sign that NVIDIA is changing?

Pokdepinion: Seems like an interesting move for NVIDIA… Let’s see how much more will they make open source.
