If you’re one of the many gamers who are looking forward to the PS5, then this could be very interesting to you. It pertains to a PlayStation controller with touchscreen capabilities which may just be for the PS5.

The folks over at Sony Interactive Entertainment America has filed an updated patent in October for what appears to be a new PlayStation controller with touchscreen capabilities. The patent was filed to the United States Patent Office and actually includes a lot of information on this new peripheral.

The patent filing for this controller is very technical however so it can be hard to digest. However, as discovered by u/AlphaFoxWarfare, it does to show some form of touchscreen addition:

A controller for interfacing wirelessly with a computing device is provided, including the following:

A housing defined by a main body, a first extension extending from a first end of the main body, and a second extension extending from a second end of the main body, the first extension and the second extension for holding by a first hand and a second hand of a user, respectively; a touchscreen defined along the top surface of the main body between the first extension and the second extension; a first set of buttons disposed on the top surface of the main body proximate to the first extension and on a first side of the touchscreen; and a second set of buttons disposed on the top surface of the main body proximate to the second extension and on a second side of the touchscreen.

That was pretty tough to digest, wasn’t it? Well, it basically pinpoints some of the most basic features of the controller and highlights that one specific touchscreen component. This gives us a rare glance into the thoughts of Sony and PlayStation’s research and development sector.

The patent describes the controller being just like a DualShock 4, so it could wind up being a version of that controller with a “touchscreen” so we might see that DNA maintained. While it’s possible that this patent is just an updated filing for the existing PlayStation controller, the added feature is definitely something to take note of.

However, given the fact the PS4 is indeed in the end of its life cycle and we’ve been hearing more and more about its successor, the PS5, this PlayStation controller with touchscreen may end up being one for the successor as it wouldn’t make sense otherwise.

For now, do take this information with a grain of salt as it may just end up not materializing anyway.

Pokdepinion: I personally just hope whatever controller we have to use on a PlayStation console next, it would be bigger in size. That’s what made me really like the Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers. It’s just so comfortable to use.
