PS4 is the Fastest Console to Reach 100 Million Units Shipped

Recently, the PlayStation 4 has reached the 100 million unit milestone, and this is no small feat by any means. There’s a number of ways to put this number to perspective. For instance, the PS4 easily outselling the Xbox One in global sales.
It wouldn’t be fair to compare it to the Nintendo Switch given the latter’s age in the market. However, it is worth noting that it is still outselling the hybrid game system on an annual basis despite being that much older.
The PlayStation 4 managed to hit the 100 million unit milestone in just under six years, and it is the fastest video game console to reach this number. Keep in mind that there isn’t many that even reached the milestone to begin with. Here’s an interesting comparison on how the system perform with regards to its new record compared to the other game systems:
- 67 months: Time for the PlayStation 4 to sell 100 million units worldwide.
- 69 months: Time for the PlayStation 2 to sell 100 million units worldwide.
- 79 months: Time for the Wii to sell 100 million units worldwide.
- 113 months: Time for the original PlayStation to sell 100 million units worldwide.
- 51 months: Time for the Nintendo DS to sell 100 million units worldwide.
- 134 months: Time for the Game Boy (and Game Boy Color) to sell 100 million units worldwide.
In case you’re wondering, yes, the Nintendo DS managed to reach 100 million units in a shorter time. However, keep in mind that it is a handheld gaming device and not a game console.

Pokdepinion: Not gonna lie, I wasn’t expecting this at all. I was very certain that the PS2 was faster. This is indeed an amazing feat.
