Now not only do you need to update your computer’s drivers, you will also need to update your smartphone’s.While GPU driver updates aren’t exactly a new thing even in Android smartphones, they are generally delivered in OS updates. The latest development from Qualcomm will see them offered on the Play Store.

This new updating method is most probably enabled by Google’s Project Mainline which aims to make Android be more modular. With the driver updates decoupled from Android updates, you will be able to enjoy faster updates for optimized performance in the latest games, just like how NVIDIA and AMD do it.

Unfortunately, Qualcomm will only be supporting the driver updates via the Play Store on the latest Snapdragon 865, Snapdragon 765/G and other upcoming chipsets. The current lineup of Snapdragons won’t enjoy similar driver updates.

There’s however another issue that Qualcomm may not be able to solve even with this new update method: slow OEMs. The updates will first have to be tested by individual OEMs against the specific smartphones before the updates will be released on the Play Store. If OEMs decide to not act on it, you are back to square one without any updates.

Pokdepinion: Oh well, at least it’s a step in the right direction.
