Samsung went back to the drawing board after the Galaxy Fold which was mired with issues pertaining to its soft flexible display, and the result is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. While they aren’t exactly similar aside from the fact that both of them fold, the Galaxy Z Flip represents what Samsung can come up with if they really wanted to.

The main upgrade that Samsung brings with the Galaxy Z Flip is the new, proprietary Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), which is bendable. Now glass usually isn’t that flexible to allow for such an acute bend, but Samsung somehow managed to make it work. That gives Samsung the advantage over all the outgoing foldable phones, simply because glass is definitely a lot more resistant to scratches than the soft plastic that all the outgoing foldable phones use.

On the flip side (pardon me), the Galaxy Z Flip is only practical to use when open. While the Galaxy Fold packed a smaller 4.7″ display on the outside for a quick reply to messages or whatnot, the Galaxy Z Flip only has a 1.1″ Super AMOLED panel that can serve as a notification ticker or a tiny screen for you to take selfies with the dual rear camera. Speaking of selfies, Samsung made a punch hole in the Galaxy Z Flip’s primary 6.7″ Infinity Flex display too.

Now behind this display lies the Hideaway Hinge, which allows the Galaxy Z Flip to stay open at various angles like a laptop, instead of just snapping open and shut. Samsung worked with Google to take advantage of this with Flex mode, so you get two halves that you can multi-task on when the phone is in this orientation. One of the highlights was using it for handsfree video conferencing as well as placing it on a flat surface for timelapse videos or long exposures.

Another benefit of it being a second-gen design is the pricing. The Galaxy Z Flip is a lot more affordable at just $1380, versus the Galaxy Fold’s $1980 launch price. Of course, you are getting a lot less screen here, but it bodes well for foldable phones in general. Samsung will begin selling the Galaxy Z Flip on 14th February in select markets. Hopefully we will be among them.
