Shenmue 3 Developers Reject Refunds Made for Epic Games Store Exclusivity

Shenmue 3 Developers Reject Refunds Made for Epic Games Store Exclusivity 20

When Shenmue 3 was first revealed, many gamers were excited that the series is finally getting a sequel after all these years. It was so well-received that the Kickstarter campaign for the game reached nearly USD $700K in funding in just 7 hours. At E3 2019, it was announced that the game will be an Epic Games Store exclusive on PC, and that made many gamers upset.

Naturally, this led to a noticeable amount of gamers to request for refunds. However, the developers have rejected the requests. In fact, the following is a message that they’ve given to backers that requested for refunds:

Hello [Backer],

Thank you very much for contacting us.

The launch was previously planned for distribution on Steam, however it was decided together with Deep silver after much discussion that the Epic Games Store would be the best distribution platform option.

Shenmue III will be distributed through the Epic Games Store and will require the Epic Games Store Client to activate.

We apologize for the sudden change in platform, however, refunds will not be granted for this change.

We thank you for your support and look forward to delivering the Shenmue experience fans everywhere have been waiting so long for.

Best Regards,
The Shenmue III Team

Developer Ys Net and publisher Deep Silver had previously been advertising Shenmue 3 to backers (who have already paid money for the title) as a digital Steam key. Many upset gamers will surely still try to force their way through this, perhaps by contacting their banks to do a chargeback.

Shenmue 3 will be coming to the PlayStation 4 and PC via Epic Games Store on 19th November 2019.

Pokdepinion: I honestly don’t feel like this is a thing worth requesting a refund for. If the game ends up a buggy mess or just have the performance in general affected, then yes, but not this.

Are you kidding, not worth requesting a refund for?? That’s like buying a house in PJ and getting the exact same house but in Seremban. Of course they are pissed.

I stand my ground, I don’t think it’s worth requesting a refund for. Equating a shift from Steam to Epic Games Store as a house purchase in two vastly different locations isn’t a good example. By your sheer effort alone, the housing example you gave is roughly 80KM / and hour an a half away from each other whereas the two game clients are just a few clicks away which you can do so comfortably at home.

I don’t know if you have a reason to hate Epic Games Store, if having another client to install / login is too troublesome, or if this is just a following the trend kinda thing. Competition is healthy, and if the developers can make more money on one store as opposed to the other, I don’t see why not as long as it’s still accessible to the masses.
