TCL is probably better known as an OEM for BlackBerry and Alcatel in the smartphone industry,  but now they are in Malaysia to make a name for themselves with the new TCL PLEX. And instead of churning out a generic mid-range smartphone which no one will remember, the TCL PLEX is actually quite impressive as far as features go.

The TCL PLEX’s 6.53″ FHD+ TCL Dotch Display touts TCL NXTVISION, promising top-notch color accuracy and SDR to HDR real-time conversion, for a HDR-like experience even when watching regular SDR videos. TCL apparently harnessed their experience at making TVs to deliver a better display. Where have we heard this before?

In addition to that, TCL equipped the PLEX with a triple camera setup. But unlike most mid-range devices, there is no depth sensor here. Instead TCL throws in a 2MP sensor with large 2.9 micron pixels as a dedicated video camera. The large pixels will help with low-light performance, and you won’t need much higher resolution for just 1080p videos. If you want 4K videos, there’s the 48MP IMX582. The third camera is a 16MP ultra-wide angle camera. Of course, TCL baked in software features like Super Night Mode, 960fps slow mo and more to round up the feature set.
