Your Telegram App Might Be Leaking Your IP Address Unintentionally

Telegram has been widely known for being a very secure messaging platform which keeps users’ security and privacy intact. However, given that it is a software made by humans, there is always a possibility of a hiccup or two in one way or another.

In this case, security research Dhiraj Mishra discovered that Telegram’s desktop app was leaking IP address, both public and private, during voice calls. This is said to be because of its peer-to-peer framework.

While Telegram users on mobile could easily turn off peer-to-peer calls and keep their information a secret, users will not have a choice but to use the technology for the desktop app. This will put you at risk of cyber-attacks or just people knowing your location.

Telegram has since fixed the issue in both version 1.3.17 beta and 1.4 of their app by giving you options to disable peer-to-peer calling entirely or limit it to your contacts. Mishra received a €2,000 (about RM9,619.65) bounty for the find.

Clearly it’s not the company’s proudest moment but this goes to show that even one that is reputable in security could have its own fair share of hiccups. It just happened to be their hiccup this time around.
