The much anticipated update to the Xiaomi Mi A-family of Android One devices is finally here in Malaysia. While the specifications are somewhat disappointing in some ways, the price makes it a pretty interesting option for those who are looking for the pure Android experience, all while having to pay less than RM1000.

One of the biggest improvements from the Xiaomi Mi A2 is the new 4030 mAh battery, which should promise much longer battery life. In addition to the lower HD+ (720p) resolution and AMOLED panel which should also contribute to increased efficiency if dark mode is enabled, the Xiaomi Mi A3 does look like it will deliver great longevity. The chipset has also been updated to the Snapdragon 665 which harnesses a newer 11nm manufacturing process, which should be great from an efficiency standpoint as well.

Xiaomi also updated the camera system with a new Sony-sourced  48MP f/1.79 main camera and a 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera, which should mean better image quality. The fairer sex should also find joy in the 32MP f/2.0 selfie camera with 4-in-1 Super Pixel technology for better low-light selfies. The Xiaomi Mi A3 touts a fresh new design too, marking a departure from the aluminium unibodies that the Mi A1 and Mi A2 featured.

Here are the Xiaomi Mi A3‘s specifications:

Xiaomi Mi A3 Specs

  • Snapdragon 665, octa-core up to 2.0 GHz, 11nm FinFET
  • Qualcomm Adreno 610
  • 4GB RAM
  • Up to 128GB UFS 2.1 storage (expandable via 256GB microSD)
  • 6.088″ HD+ AMOLED, Dot Drop notch, NTSC 102.7%

  • 32MP f/2.0 selfie camera

  • 4GB + 64GB: RM899
    4GB + 128GB: RM999

The Xiaomi Mi A3 looks like a decent buy, however the screen and chipset does seem like a downgrade from the Xiaomi Mi A2. The lower resolution and larger battery does promise better battery life though, which should solve our main grouse with the Xiaomi Mi A2. And oh, it also gets the headphone jack back. What do you guys think? Do you think the Xiaomi Mi A3 is making the right compromises? If you think so, the Xiaomi Mi A3 is available from 3rd August.

Pokdepinion: Why that screen though… I am willing to pay a bit more for a FHD+ screen…
