Many of us know when the PlayStation 5 will be released but we don’t know for sure what it looks like just yet. It may still be a while before we see the console but now, we have an idea as to how the DualShock 5 / PS5 controller will look like.

According to VGC, the Japanese Patent Office recently updated and contained a new submission from Sony potentially showing off the DualShock 5 controller. As seen from image mockups at the top of this post, the DualShock 5 / PS5 controller looks very similar to the DualShock 4.

The biggest changes for Sony’s next controller seem to come in the way of an added microphone, a remodeled touchpad, larger triggers, smaller thumbsticks, and the removal of the light bar. It will be using USB-C for charging instead of Micro USB.

For the most part, the DualShock 5 / PS5 controller isn’t a big change from its predecessor. Like with previous PlayStation consoles, the controller design change has always been kept to a minimum. We do find the removal of the light bar rather odd but perhaps it was done to boost the battery life.

With that being said, the light bar is used for a number of PSVR games to track movement. Perhaps future VR games on the platform will have a new method to track movement. We’ll just have to wait and see.

The DualShock 5 / PS5 controller design at the top of this post is not the final design. It is merely a patent so it could be one of many designs that Sony Interactive Entertainment is experimenting on. With that being said, at least we now have a good idea as to how the final product may look like.

The PlayStation 5 is expected to launch sometime in Holiday 2020.

Pokdepinion: I’m more curious about the size. If it is bigger than the DualShock 4 and is comparable to the Xbox One controller, I’ll be pretty happy.
