While GlobalFoundries is a name that might not be as familiar to everyone as TSMC, they are still one of the top semiconductor manufacturers. And they are adding a new fabrication plant to their Singapore campus to further increase their production capacity to meet the ever-growing demand for semiconductors.

GlobalFoundries will be investing more than $4 billion (~RM16.65 billion) into the Singapore manufacturing plant. The new plant is slated to churn out 450 000 wafers a year, bringing the total capacity of the Singapore campus up to around 1.5 million 300mm wafers per year.

GlobalFoundries has not revealed what process node will be used in the new Singapore fab, but they did reveal that they will be churning out chips for the automotive, 5G mobility and secure device segments from the fab. With the recent global semiconductor shortage affecting carmakers to the point that they were forced to stop production, this expansion must be very welcome news to them.

The new fab in Singapore is planned to be ready by 2023, and it is expected to bring 1000 new high-value jobs to the country. GlobalFoundries also has plans to expand their capacity in the U.S. and Germany.

Pokdepinion: I wonder if they will consider exploring beyond 12nm since they now can probably earn a lot more revenue from the global shortage.
