ASUS has just announced the VivoStick, a pocket-sized PC that converts any HDMI display or TV  into a Windows PC for work or play. Powered by a power efficient quad core Intel Atom x5-Z8350 processor mated to 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM, with 32GB of built-in storage. The ASUS VivoStick is plug-and-play ready without the need for complicated setup procedures.

Despite its very compact dimensions, it packs high speed 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1 wireless connectivity options, while also sporting one USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0 port. It also features an audio jack, in case you do not want to use HDMI audio output. Keeping the hardware inside cool is an internal cooling fan.

Users can cast content to a larger screen with ASUS HyStream, an app which lets you mirror or stream full HD content stored on your Android or iOS devices or PCs to a HDMI-enabled TV in any home theater setup. The VivoStick can also be controlled via smart devices with the ASUS VivoRemote app. This app gives you wireless keyboard and mouse controls, as well as access to the files on the VivoStick, all on the smart device. With the VivoStick, frequent travelers can just carry the VivoStick and plug it into the HDMI-capable TV in their hotel room to watch content or even do a little work, without having to lug around a heavy laptop.

Business users who are interested in setting up a low-maintenance and cost-effective fleet of computers may also take a serious look at the VivoStick as it can be used as a thin-client platform. The firmware-based Trusted Platform Module (fTPM) also keeps data secure against threats. It also supports touchscreens, making the VivoStick an attractive proposition as a dedicated point-of-sale machine. Aside from that, it can also serve as a digital signage solution for both indoor and outdoor displays. The VivoStick features a eyelet notch for you to secure it to a monitor or display to prevent theft of this tiny little computer.

The ASUS VivoStick is available now, at a price of RM699 and is covered by a 1 year warranty by ASUS Malaysia.

Pokdepinion: These compact PCs the size of a big thumbdrive are really quite practical. I have used the Intel Compute Stick and it was really quite an enjoyable experience aside from some minor niggles. The ASUS VivoStick comes with a vastly more powerful SoC, much better WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities and also more USB ports, essentially solving all the issues I had with the Compute Stick in a single product.
