AMD or Intel? Why not both?; Intel integrates AMD Vega and HBM2 on its mobile CPUs

Intel and AMD work out their differences and combines their expertise in Intel’s 8th Gen Intel Core H-series of high performance mobile processors.

If the Coffee Lake and Kaby Lake Refresh were underwhelming to you, this might be more interesting. Confirming the rumors that were floating around, Intel was indeed working with AMD’s Radeon Technologies Group. The result? The 8th Gen Intel Core H-series of high performance mobile processors.

The latest Intel Core H-series processors combines Intel’s Coffee Lake-H CPU dies with AMD’s latest Vega GPUs and HBM2 memory for immense performance on a single package. We know Intel’s iGPUs pale in comparison with what AMD has packed into their APUs, so this will definitely give Intel an edge.

The AMD GPU will communicate with the Intel CPU via a new Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge (EMIB). This configuration allows for smaller motherboards without sacrificing the performance afforded only by dedicated GPU solutions. To enable better efficiency, the CPU and GPU also features a new power sharing framework to ensure that you can get extend your battery life when you are away from a plug.

Intel plans to use these new processors in thinner devices while delivering more performance than previous generations of Intel processors were capable of. Look forward to these processors in Q1 2018 when OEMs roll out their designs packing these CPUs.

Pokdepinion: The solution is novel, but at what price? We know HBM2 is pricey, so expect these CPUs to cost a pretty penny. I wonder what NVIDIA has to say about this though.
