While all the hype is about the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen processors, there are still a number of AMD processors that aren’t available for consumers. The AMD Ryzen 3 2300X is a good example of it; a 2nd Generation AMD Ryzen processor that was only available for OEMs previously.

It’s not going to blow your mind with crazy amounts of cores or high boost clocks, but it is very affordable. For RM299, you get a 4C/4T part that boosts up to 4.0 GHz. There’s only 8MB of cache, but you probably won’t need more with just four processing threads.

AMD rated the TDP at just 65W and it also comes with a Wraith Stealth so you are ready to go out of the box. You might want to invest in a better cooler though as you can overclock the Ryzen 3 2300X.

AMD Ryzen 3 2300X Specs

  • 4C/4T @ 3.5 GHz (Boost up to 4.0 GHz)
  • 8MB L3 cache
  • 65W TDP
  • 12nm FinFET (TSMC)
  • RM299

It might be a good upgrade for those who are on older PCs, as it is really quite inexpensive and you will be getting onto the AM4 platform which should still offer support for 4th Gen AMD Ryzen processors in the near future. Interestingly, AMD has been releasing previously OEM-only parts for consumers recently, with the AMD Ryzen 5 3500X, Ryzen 5 3500 and now the Ryzen 3 2300X being made available for end users.
