The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X offered 64 cores, but AMD nerfed its memory support and number of PCIe lanes. For those who needed more than 256GB of memory and 64 PCIe 4.0 lanes, you can consider picking up a AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX which will offer the same number of cores, but with support for 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes and 2TB of DDR4 memory.

Similar to how the AMD Ryzen PRO processors are designed with enhanced security, manageability and reliability as part of the AMD PRO Technologies, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO delivers on that front as well. However instead of just slapping on the extra features onto the regular Ryzen Threadrippers, AMD put in extra effort to add features from the AMD EPYC lineup to the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO lineup.

There’s now support for RDIMMs (registered DIMMs) and LRDIMMs (load reduction DIMMs), along with eight channel memory support. AMD Memory Guard is also present here, giving full memory encryption to protect sensitive data in the memory. It comes in configurations ranging from the 12-core Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3945WX all the way up to the 64-core Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX. Interestingly enough, all the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO processors will offer support for 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes and 2TB of memory.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO Specs

Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3945WX Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3955WX Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3975WX Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX
Cores/Threads 12C/24T 16C/32T 32C/64T 64C/128T
Base/Boost Clocks 4.0 / 4.3 GHz 3.9 / 4.3 GHz 3.5 / 4.2 GHz 2.7 / 4.2 GHz
Total Cache 70MB 72MB 144MB 288MB
TDP 280W 280W 280W 280W

To put all that into perspective, the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper offers 64 PCIe 4.0 lanes and support for up to 256GB memory. It also only supports quad-channel memory configurations, unlike the Ryzen Threadripper PRO’s support for octa-channel memory.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO vs Xeon

With such an immense core count, AMD’s only competition from Intel are dual-socketed Intel Xeon Platinum 8280. Needless to say, AMD comes out on top, as to Xeon Platinum 8280 only comes up to 56 cores, while AMD is already giving you 64 cores in a single socket.

Lenovo ThinkStation P620 Ryzen Threadripper PRO

It is probably worth mentioning that you can’t exactly pick up a Ryzen Threadripper PRO CPU off the shelf. AMD is only offering the Ryzen Threadripper PRO in OEM pre-built workstations only. The first to come with the Threadripper PRO processors will be the Lenovo ThinkStation P620, which can be configured with everything ranging up to the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX, up to 1TB RAM and dual Quadro RTX 8000 GPUs or four Quadro RTX 4000 GPUs.
