AMD has announced their latest AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-series processors that feature the latest Zen 3 cores. These will be OEM-only parts, with the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-series only available in the Lenovo ThinkStation Pro 620 pre-builts for now.

Just like previous generations of AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO products, these are for professional workstation applications. They are a bump up from the non-PRO versions of the Ryzen Threadripper processors, which are intended for enthusiasts. It bridges the gap between the AMD EPYC lineup of server processors, and the AMD Ryzen range which is more consumer-oriented.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 series vs 3000 series

Coming from the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3000 series, we are not seeing any other major upgrades, aside from the jump to the Zen 3 core architecture. With that said, Zen 3 delivered massive performance boosts in the desktop space, and with them scaling up to 64 cores in the Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-series, you can expect all the performance boosts to scale as well.

The biggest differentiator will be the fact that the Zen 3 architecture involves 8-core CCDs, versus the 4-core CCXes of Zen 2. This allows 8 Zen 3 cores to access 32MB L3 cache without additional latency, unlike with Zen 2 where the 8-core clusters were divided into two CCXes with 16MB L3 cache each. The AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-series will still support the same sWRX8 socket, and thus will work with existing WRX80 motherboards, after a BIOS update. But of course, since it’s currently only available in the Lenovo ThinkStation Pro P620, that’s somewhat of a moot point for now.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5995WX versus Intel Xeon Platinum 8280

Compared against their Intel counterpart, the Intel Xeon series, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-series is up to 67% more efficient, delivering up to 2X better performance-to-power ratio. Performance gains ranges, but the Threadripper PRO 5995WX is capable of outperforming TWO Intel Xeon Platinum 8280, which is a very impressive feat indeed.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-series series Specs

Cores / Threads Base / Boost frequency (GHz) L2 + L3 cache TDP
AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5995WX 64C/128T 2.7 / 4.5 288MB 280W
AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5975WX 32C/64T 3.6 / 4.5 144MB 280W
AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5965WX 24C/48T 3.8 / 4.5 140MB 280W
AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5955WX 16C/32T 4.0 / 4.5 72MB 280W
AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5945WX 12C/24T 4.1 / 4.5 70MB 280W

No pricing information for these processors are available, which is understandable given that they are OEM-only products.
