Everybody is still waiting for AMD Zen news but lately there’s not much news about it. But recently there’s a little good news for you guys. A source stated that AMD will enable the GCC compiler on the upcoming AMD Zen processor.

It’s started when AMD’s Venkataramanan Kumar sent out the znver1 enablement patch for Zen again this past week on the GCC mailing list and then upstream GCC developers have responded positively towards the patch and has given an okay sign.

As a recap, AMD Zen is the latest AMD architecture, built new from the ground up and is the successor to AMD Excavator architecture. We learned that the AMD Zen will featured High Performance Computing AP with up to 8 Zen cores and 12MB of L2 and L3 cache.

It’s also to be said that it have a 40% IPC improvement that would put Zen on par with the Haswell-based Intel i7 5960X Extreme. AMD Zen is speculated to be available to the market on Q3 2016 but we still have no idea whether it will be using 14nm or 16nm manufacturing process or an even smaller process node by then.

Pokdepinion : AMD Zen is still a long way away though. There’s a lot risks involved for AMD. The AMD Zen will be their trump card to solve the financial issue they’re facing right now. AMD Zen will be either AMD’s success or doom. I just hope the PR department will do a better job for the AMD Zen, not like what they did for the Bulldozer. For me it might end in a happy ending for AMD since AMD Zen will be using SMT design and focus on greater per-core performance.
