CES 2021: AMD Ryzen 9 5900 and Ryzen 7 5800 lands with 65W TDP
After appearing in leaks, the AMD Ryzen 9 5900 and Ryzen 7 5800 are official. Similar to their predecessors, they are 65W TDP parts, and are meant for OEM systems only, which means that you won’t be able to buy a 65W Zen 3 CPU with more than six cores off the shelf just yet.
What this means is that AMD will now be offering the sweet 19% IPC gains that they announced with the AMD Ryzen 5000 series, but at a lower TDP rating. This will allow OEMs to fit them into smaller systems with less cooling capacity. For context, the tiny Wraith Stealth that comes with the Ryzen 5 5600X will technically be suitable to cool the Ryzen 9 5900 and Ryzen 7 5800, given that they now share the same TDP specification.
AMD Ryzen 9 5900 and Ryzen 9 5800 Specs
Cores / Threads | Base / Boost Clocks | L2 + L3 cache | TDP | |
AMD Ryzen 9 5900 | 12C/24T | 3.0 / 4.7 GHz | 70MB | 65W |
AMD Ryzen 7 5800 | 8C/16T | 3.4 / 4.6 GHz | 36MB | 65W |
It should be quite interesting to see how well will these CPUs boost under full multi-threaded workloads, considering that AMD’s power limits for their 65W TDP processors will probably end up around 88W. The Ryzen 9 5900X and Ryzen 7 5800X each come with a 105W TDP, and they can draw up to 142W under full load.
Pokdepinion: Imagine cramming one of these in an SFF build with just a low-profile 65W cooler on it…
