Mitsubishi Electric has recently demoed a new laser display which improves the color gamut by 70% compared to older laser displays. The new laser backlight technology used for the display was exhibited at the Createc Japan 2015, and this new technology promises up to over 98% of the sRGB gamut at resolutions of up to 8K.

Mitsubishi Electric has developed a new backlighting technology, that uses new RGB laser diodes as the light source for the LCD panel.

The RGB laser light are emitted in a straight line which then needs to be spread evenly throughout the LCD panel to be effective as a backlight. To make this possible, Mitsubishi Electric developed a bar-like light guide plate which contains a special material to scatter the light. Esentially the plate function is to spread the laser light evenly behind the LCD panel.

However this technology, like all new technology, does not come cheap, and the cost to implement it is higher than conventional LED backlight of normal LCD TVs.

For now Mitsubishi electric aren’t planning to sell the displays equipped with the new technology to consumers but it targets businesses or professionals that can benefit from a high-quality 8K display panel with a wide color gamut, like broadcasting studios, for example.

Pokdepinion : Is this the future of display technology? Look and compare the pictures as attached above, the display equipped with the RGB laser backlight technology has a marked advantage over the conventional LED-backlit panel. I know this will not come cheap, but as usual with most new technologies, prices will gradually decrease until it is affordable to the average consumer.
