AMD’s upcoming Navi 2X GPUs are affectionately nicknamed “Big Navi”, and it seems like the 2X numbering isn’t just to indicate that it is the second generation. According to a leak, AMD’s next flagship GPU will have a die size more than double (2X, geddit?) that of the Radeon RX 5700 XT’s 251 mm2.

The AMD Navi 21 is slated to sport a die size of 505 mm2, while the AMD Navi 22 and Navi 23 will offer smaller 340 mmand 240 mm2 dies, respectively. There might be an even bigger AMD Navi 20 GPU, if we were to go by AMD’s previous naming convention. But perhaps AMD might be hiding their ace up their sleeves to use at a later date.

Usually a larger die size also correlates to increased performance, and this will most likely be the case. Although it is worth noting that the next-gen RDNA 2 architecture will also come with hardware-accelerated raytracing, so some of that die area will be used for AMD’s version of RT cores, and not all of that die area will be dedicated to increasing raster performance. Still, it should yield quite a huge leap in terms of performance, thanks to gains from other architectural improvements that AMD has managed to implement.

It’s also probably worth mentioning that while the AMD Navi 21 is going to a much larger GPU than the Radeon RX 5700 XT, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti sports an even bigger GPU measuring at 754 mm2. Then again, NVIDIA’s flagship GPU is manufactured on the older 12nm process, while AMD’s Navi 2X GPUs will be made on TSMC’s “enhanced” 7nm node, so it isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison here. With that said, this should also allow AMD to price the Navi 2X cards more competitively against NVIDIA’s offerings, as they will be able to get more GPUs per silicon wafer than NVIDIA.

In addition to the leap in performance, RDNA 2 is also going to deliver greatly improved efficiency, to the tune of 50% better performance-per-watt, which should help Big Navi run cooler too, aside from contributing less to your monthly power bill.

Pokdepinion: I do hope AMD can serve up a card that’s truly competitive to NVIDIA’s top-of-the-line GPUs!
