AMD Radeon 780M iGPU May Be As Fast As GTX 1650 Max-Q, Faster Than GTX 980 Ti
The onboard graphics sitting inside the upcoming Ryzen 7040HS series CPUs may pack some serious graphics horsepower – all without the need of discrete graphics.
The leaks of the upcoming Ryzen 7040HS series has been surfacing lately – though the most anticipated part of it isn’t necessarily the CPU. Rather, it’s the onboard GPU – which is a 12 CU RDNA3-powered Radeon 780M. Recent benchmarks has seen its performance approaching entry-level discrete gaming GPUs and even surpassing some high end GPUs in the past.
The most recent leak comes from OpenCL benchmark courtesy of Geekbench 5, with 36757 points achieved. That places it in between Max-Q variants of GTX 1650 and GTX 1650 Ti, which are paired into some entry-level gaming laptops in the past. Videocardz has published a list of OpenCL scores in which the former flagship card, the GTX 980 Ti, can be seen trailing behind the Radeon iGPU:

To further hit home with that claim, another benchmark earlier courtesy of 3DMark Time Spy has shown similar results. The score of 3325 points has placed it right behind GTX 1650 Ti, which is the performance bracket that most gamers game on (Steam Hardware Survey listed GTX 1650 as the most popular GPU earlier on, recently unseating the GTX 1060). The Ryzen 7040HS series should arrive in the next month or two, and expect laptops coming with this chips to make their announcements in due course.
Pokdepinion: Crazy to think onboard graphics has enough compute power to rival an entry-level gaming systems these days.
