At the Next Horizon Event, the folks over at AMD has unveiled the world’s first 7nm GPU, the Radeon Instinct MI60 and MI50. These GPUs were designed to handle the most intensive workloads including deep learning, high-performance computing, cloud computers, and other intensive rendering applications.

Both the AND Radeon Instinct MI60 and MI50 were built on AMD’s Vega 20 architecture, albeit enhanced, under TSMC’s 7nm FinFET manufacturing process, which features a 2x uplift in density and thus allowing it to have a total of 13.2 billion transistors.

It is said to have about 1.25x performance over the Vega-based Instinct GPUs and will be much more power efficient, utilizing only 50% at the same clock speeds. Both cards will be the first to take advantage of PCI-SIG’s PCIe 4.0 x16 interface, which can see up to 31.51 GB/s of bandwidth. Next gen Infinity Fabric Link technology will allow for peer-to-peer GPU communication at speeds of up to 200 GB/s.

For performance, AMD mentioned that the Radeon Instinct MI60 can give out 14.7 TFLOPS FP32 and 7.4 TFLOPS FP64 compute. The Radeon Instinct MI50 on the other hand is a little lower at 13.4 TFLOPS and 6.7 TFLOPS respectively.

These GPUs are designed for the purpose of high-performance computing and deep learning. As such, you’re not going to be aiming for this for gaming. In fact, there are no display connectors on it so even if you try, you’re going to be out of luck.

We have included some of the world’s first 7nm GPU right below here for easy digesting:

Pokdepinion: World’s first 7nm GPU eh? Well, as technology evolves, we’ll see even smaller one but for now, this one is actually a pretty big deal.

For compute applications, their focus might be to reduce power usage. But for gamers, the final product should deliver similar or slightly lower power consumption, but higher performance.

Let's Discuss It Further
