We have seen our fair share of leaks regarding the upcoming AMD Radeon RX 490, but we have not seen much in terms of actual performance numbers. We now have benchmark scores of the AMD Radeon Pro 490, not the RX 490, but we expect performance figures to be similar.

Well based on the 3DMark benchmarks, the Radeon Pro 490 beats the GeForce GTX 1070 from the green camp, which is quite nice to see. What makes this even better is that if you have been following the progress of AMD cards, two RX 480s should actually outperforms a GeForce GTX 1080, and this new Radeon Pro 490 only outperforms a GTX 1070, which gives me the impression that the Radeon Pro 490 may be the first card to be based on the new Vega architecture.

Based on AMD’s official naming convention, the 49X series will be targeted at 4K gameplay, which also means that AMD will be packing a lot of horsepower in the upcoming Radeon RX 490. Will this be the first card packing a Vega 10 GPU remains to be seen. While rumors of a dual Polaris 10 card has been around for some time, it seems quite unlikely that the Radeon Pro 490 is a dual Polaris 10 card, as performance would have to be nipping at the GTX 1080’s heels, especially after all that talk from AMD about how the RX 480 in CrossFire would beat a GTX 1080 in terms of performance and value for money.

Pokdepinion: I can’t wait to see a card from AMD matching the GTX 1070. However if it was really a dual GPU that only beats the GTX 1070, I would be quite disappointed.

Just think about the other Radeon Pro 4xx products…

They’re mobile parts. Seems this could be as well.

Mobile Vega… which is good, because this perfoance would be quite bad for desktop Vega.

That could also be a possibility. As a laptop user, a 1070-class AMD GPU would be very interesting!
