Intel has just announced that their Intel Xe GPU architecture will be an all-encompassing one, with it covering everything from integrated GPUs to high performance computing (HPC) deployments. Of course, there will be multiple alterations to the architecture to allow it to cater to different needs, but Intel is going with a very clear branding this time. Intel Xe.

For high performance computing, Intel has lined up Ponte Vecchio, which will be Intel’s first exascale GPU. Slated for a 2021 launch, it packs all of Intel’s latest innovations including their Foveros 3D packaging and Intel Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge (EMIB) for inter-chiplet communication. The chips will be built on Intel’s upcoming 7nm process, as well as feature Compute eXpress Link (CXL) interface for inter-GPU bandwidth.

Ponte Vecchio will be part of the Aurora Supercomputer, which will see each node combine two Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the Sapphire Rapids family with six Ponte Vecchio GPUs.

Pokdepinion: Chiplet-based GPUs sound pretty interesting… Wonder if that will make it to the gaming GPU solutions.
