The dust has yet to settle on the desktop GeForce RTX 30 series GPUs, but it seems like leakers have now turned their attention towards the mobile GPUs instead. The GeForce RTX 3070 Max-Q, RTX 3080 Max-Q and RTX 3060 mobile GPUs have been spotted on a specifications list provided by a manufacturer to pre-order their upcoming laptops featuring the Ampere GPUs.

What’s interesting to note is that there are no GeForce RTX 3080 and GeForce RTX 3070 in the non-Max-Q configurations in this list. It is understandable that the GA102 might be a bit too much for laptops, considering that the GeForce RTX 3080 and its 10GB of GDDR6X memory pull in excess of 300W, but the GeForce RTX 3070 which sports a 220W TGP should be quite easily cooled by today’s high performance laptop designs.

Max-Q Advanced Optimus

We might be looking at some thin-and-light gaming laptops here, which will explain the Max-Q configurations, but then again the CPUs offered range all the way up to an Intel Core i9-10980HK. We have seen the processor appear in relatively thin laptops, although they definitely do not allow the processor to fully stretch its legs. Speaking of which, the fact that the GeForce RTX 30 series will not arrive with the 11th Gen Tiger Lake-H processors does seem quite disappointing. I was hoping to see PCIe 4.0 in laptops. Like real PCIe 4.0 x16, not just a meagre 4 lanes.

Pokdepinion: To be honest, AMD’s lack of presence in the mobile GPU segment does irk me a little. I wonder if we will see another similar scenario this time around…
