The announcement of the Radeon Technologies Group harks back to a time when ATi Radeon was still a separate company, producing graphics solutions competing against now-market leader NVIDIA’s products. Raja Koduri, an ATI veteran that was responsible for creating the very first DX9 GPU in the industry will lead the new division. Raja was brought back to the company in 2013 after a stint at Apple to lead the company’s graphics efforts. Raja now holds the title of chief architect, Radeon Technologies Group, and will be reporting directly to CEO Dr. Lisa Su as a Senior Vice President inside the AMD fold.

Koduri is responsible for overseeing all aspects of graphics technologies used in AMD’s APU, discrete GPU, semi-custom, and GPU compute products. This also includes AMD’s LiquidVR initiative which aims to make VR as comfortable and realistic as possible by creating and maintaining what’s known as “presence” — a state of immersive awareness where situations, objects, or characters within the virtual world seem “real.”

“AMD is one of the few companies with the engineering talent and IP to make emerging immersive computing opportunities a reality,” said Koduri. “Now, with the Radeon Technologies Group, we have a dedicated team focused on growing our business as we create a unique environment for the best and brightest minds in graphics to be a part of the team re-defining the industry.”

There’s now a total of three business groups inside AMD. The Radeon Technologies Group, a dedicated graphics division headed by ATi veteran Raja Koduri. The Enterprise Embedded and Semi-custom group headed by the former Dell server veteran Forrest Norrod. And finally the Computing And Graphics Group, which should be renamed soon with the breaking off of the new dedicated graphics division, which is responsible for CPUs and APUs and is headed by the ex-Intel and IBM veteran Jim Anderson who will be responsible for introducing AMD’s highly anticipated Zen CPU core to the world next year.

Pokdepinion: Let’s hope with the formation of the new dedicated graphics division, we will not only see greater graphics cards, but also better processors, as AMD has lagged behind Intel for quite sometime in the consumer CPU market.
