If you own a ROG Maximus Z690 Hero, it’s quite likely that you have stumbled across the issues that some owners are facing. There’s apparently a few batches out in the wild that have a reversed memory capacitor, which will lead to some catastrophic hardware failure if left unchecked. Thankfully, ASUS North America has already announced a recall, as it seems that the issues are mainly focused in the region.

ROG Maximus Z690 Hero recall announced over reversed capacitor

ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 Hero Review-18

It seems that the issue affects a few batches, where the capacitors are installed wrongly. You can watch the following video by Buildzoid to get a better understanding as to why the reversed capacitor will blow up the memory MOSFETs, but the gist of it is that the reversed capacitor isn’t doing what it is supposed to do, and lets too much power through to the MOSFETs and blows them up.

The manufacturing issue affects ROG Maximus Z690 Hero boards with the part number 90MB18E0-MVAAY0 and serial numbers starting with MA, MB or MC. The ROG Maximus Z690 Hero I have on hand has an entirely different part number, and it does have the capacitor the right way around, so I guess I will be safe.

ASUS Announcement Regarding Maximus Z690 Hero Issue

To our valued ASUS Customers,

ASUS is committed to producing the highest quality products and we take every incident report from our valued customers very seriously. We have recently received incident reports regarding the ROG Maximus Z690 Hero motherboard. In our ongoing investigation, we have preliminarily identified a potential reversed memory capacitor issue in the production process from one of the production lines that may cause debug error code 53, no post, or motherboard components damage. The issue potentially affects units manufactured in 2021 with the part number 90MB18E0-MVAAY0 and serial number starting with MA, MB, or MC.

As of December 28, 2021, there have been a few incidents reported in North America. Going forward, we are continuing our thorough inspection with our suppliers and customers to identify all possible affected ROG Maximus Z690 Hero motherboards in the market and will be working with relevant government agencies on a replacement program.

Thank you so much to everyone for your patience and support while we are working through the replacement program.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact ASUS customer service.

UPDATE: Malaysian units are unaffected

Local units are apparently not affected, as they bear the part number 90MB18E0-MUAY. Stay safe and happy overclocking!

Pokdepinion: I bet it must come as quite a surprise to those affected by the exploding memory power delivery, considering that DDR5 has most of the power management offloaded to the DIMMs themselves.
