Silicon Motion has put plans for next-gen PCIe 5.0 controllers in motion
PCIe 4.0 storage is still far from mainstream, with most of the PCIe 4.0 drives in the market being prohibitively pricey. Then there’s also the fact that most PCIe 3.0 drives are also fast enough to deliver a great user experience. With all that said, Silicon Motion has already started working on PCIe 5.0 SSD controllers.
PCIe 5.0 will bring double the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0, which means that a PCIe 5.0 x4 SSD should be capable of up to 16GB/s read and write speeds. It is worth mentioning that Silicon Motion announced that they are working on enterprise-grade SSD controllers set for a 2022 release.
On the consumer end, we can probably expect PCIe 5.0 SSDs with Silicon Motion controllers in 2023. Both Intel and AMD reportedly working on consumer-oriented platforms that support both DDR5 and PCIe 5.0. Intel might be the first to bring PCIe 5.0 to the table, with the 12th Gen Intel Alder Lake processors slated to come with support for the faster interface as early as September.
As usual with all new standards, do expect early PCIe 5.0 drives to be exorbitantly priced, at least until the standard becomes more mainstream.
