Ever wondered which telco offered the fastest download and upload speeds when roaming? Well, Opensignal just shared with us two reports which detailed the average speeds obtained by Singaporeans travelling to Malaysia, as well as Malaysians travelling to Singapore. Their data includes the disparity between the speeds that the domestic users enjoy versus the speeds that the roaming users get.

Get Digi if you travel to Singapore often

For Malaysians, Digi users get the best experience in Singapore. On average, Digi users get 46.8 Mbps download speeds and 13.5 Mbps upload. They also enjoy the lowest latency at 36.4ms. Interestingly, Digi and Maxis roam on both Singtel and Starhub, but Digi still comes up on top of Maxis consistently.

U Mobile is the worst telco when it comes to download and upload speeds, but it comes in second for latency, slotting in above Maxis. Celcom users suffer the worst latency when roaming in Singapore at 48.8 ms, more than double what Singaporean users can enjoy on M1 domestically.

Singtel is the best for Singaporeans frequenting Malaysia

A peculiarity is observed here, with Singtel actually offering a faster download speed while roaming than its host network (Maxis). Singtel’s advantage over M1 and Starhub is pretty apparent too, with nearly double the download speed. For upload speeds, Singtel is still in first place, albeit with a smaller lead.

When it comes to latency, Singtel posts excellent figures while roaming, even better than what domestic users enjoy. M1’s ping is just unacceptable at 74.5 ms.

If you frequently visit Singapore, you know which network to subscribe to, while for Singaporeans who come to Malaysia, you also know which telco to use. Hopefully when we finally discover the vaccine for COVID-19, we can travel between our countries more freely again.
