Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Zahidi Zainul Abidin

According to Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Zahidi Zainul Abidin, one big reason that rural areas in Malaysia suffer from poor internet connection is due to theft and vandalism. Apparently, copper and optic fibre cables are dug and stolen, which are necessary hardware for internet connection in the area.

As a result of it being stolen or worse yet, damaged, certain rural areas will suddenly lose internet access. Apart from that, there are cases of power generators, including solar-based ones, that are in charge of transmission towers being damaged by acts of vandalism.

Moving forward, Minister Zahidi is looking to use a new technology to solve the issue with hopes of further improving internet connectivity in rural areas, especially in Sabah and Sarawak. At the moment, it is said that there are less than 20% of red zones (areas with no internet connection in non-urban areas).

Over 2,360 communications towers have been built as of June 2020, with roughly 280 more still being constructed. Moreover, the equipment at 5,348 transmission towers have been upgraded to add support for 3G and 4G connectivity., with 11 more still in the upgrade process.
