Telekom Malaysia (TM) Confirms Data Breach

Good news! TM is not going out of business!

It was recently discovered that a database containing the personal data of Unifi Mobile customers had been put up for sale on a database marketplace. The listing claimed that the database contained around 2.7 million entries, but telecommunications company TM, which owns Unifi Mobile, has stated that the number of customers affected by the data leak is actually 250,248.

The leaked database included information such as full name, phone number, and email for both individual and small and medium-sized business customers. TM has confirmed that the data leak is legitimate and has released an official statement on the matter on the Unifi website.

TM has stated that all customers affected by the data leak have been notified and assured those who did not receive notification that they were not impacted by the leak. The company has implemented additional security measures without disrupting services and is conducting further assessments of the situation.

They have also reported the incident to various authorities, including the National Cyber Coordination & Command Centre (NC4), the Privacy & Data Protection Department (JPDP), and the Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission (MCMC). However, the statement did not provide any information on the cause of the leak or whether it was caused by internal / external parties.

Pokdepinion: Not exactly a great way to end a year and start a new one but it is what it is. If you’re a customer, take any and every countermeasures you can to avoid or at least minimize potential issues down the road.
