After the first RTG technology summit,Visual Technologies, that focused on new technology and features, the second summit, Software Material is focusing on a new compiler and open source GPU technology.

RTG has announced three news updates to its GPUOpen initiative which are GPUOpen for Gaming, a new compiler for Heterogeneous Computing and Linux Driver and Runtime Focused for HPC.

GPUOpen for Gaming

RTG-Tech-Summit--Software-Session-2

As the continuation of the strategy started with Mantle API, RTG are giving even more control of the GPU to developers. As console developers have benefited from low-level access to the GPU, RTG want to bring the same goodness to the PC platform.

RTG-Tech-Summit--Software-Session-3

The GPUOpen for gaming is giving developers the ability to harness the investment they’ve made. Game developers now have direct access to GPU hardware, access to a large collection of open source effects, tools, libraries and SDKs.

New Compiler for Heterogeneous Computing

GPUs are originally designed to perform graphics computations quickly with parallel processing, and now it has become more powerful and more generalized. With Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA), it allows the CPU and GPU to work together, resulting in great power efficiency.

RTG-Tech-Summit--Software-Session-6

The new AMD “Boltzmann Initiative” suite includes an HCC compiler for C++ development, greatly expanding the field of programmers who can leverage HSA. It enables developers to easily and efficiently apply discrete GPU hardware resources in heterogeneous systems.

RTG-Tech-Summit--Software-Session-7

This is an initiative to oppose NVIDIA’s CUDA technology, RTG testing shows that in many cases 90% or more CUDA code can be automatically converted into C++.

Linux Driver and Runtime Focused for HPC

RTG-Tech-Summit--Software-Session-10

As part of RTG’s commitment to Linux platform, RTG developed a new HPC-focused open source driver and system runtime. The new headless driver brings capabilities to address core high-performance computing needs including the low latency compute dispatch and PCIe data transfer; peer-to-peer GPU support.

Pokdepinion: The most interesting part of the announcement is the new HSA compiler, enabling developers to access the GPU hardware to harness even more performance. In gaming’s case, it will greatly improve the performance and latency.
