WhatsApp is adding a new security layer to increase the privacy level for its desktop and web applications. Moving forward, users will have to verify prior to linking their accounts to desktop or web to ensure that it is truly them. The update has rolled out for a number of countries but it’s expected to be made available worldwide in the next two weeks.

In order to verify your account to use WhatsApp Desktop or web version, you can use face or fingerprint unlock if you’re an Android user. For iPhone users on the other hand, you will need to use your Face ID. A security confirmation will pop up whenever you link your account to a different PC, and it will be required prior to scanning the usual QR code.

Just in case you’re worried, the company assures everyone that face and fingerprint authentication is secure and private, therefore, they cannot access the biometric information stored on your smartphones. Next up, they are expected to include multi-device support using this new feature as a base, but no word on exactly when the feature will be making its way to the public. We’ll report more on this as soon as information becomes available so stay tuned.

Pokdepinion: Well, given the competition is heating up, I’m not surprised to see them take extra measures to get people more comfortable using the platform.
