Dark Mode Scheduler May Be Coming to Android

Dark Mode Scheduler May Be Coming to Android 26

As many of you may know by now, system-wide Dark Mode was a key highlight of Android 10. Now, it looks like Google is looking to take that one step further and make it more versatile. This new feature that’s being worked on is called Dark Mode Scheduler.

Dark Mode Scheduler works by allowing the system to switch to Dark Mode based on the time of the day. You can even customize it to trigger it at a particular time as opposed to relying on the default settings. Initially, it was designed to be a native feature of Android 10 but was then omitted in beta phase.

According to Chris Baines of Android Developer Relations, the feature was removed because it’s difficult to calculate sunrise / sunsets, especially for locations close to north and south poles. When compared to the Night Light feature introduced in Android Nougat, it was said to be possible as it used CalendarAstronomer from ICU4J.

It’s clear that Google wants to avoid creating more problems with user experience. However, there’s no denying that it’s a practical feature, and one that many users would want. There is a high chance it will pop up on Android 11 instead, after they have more time testing it. If it ever pops up earlier, we’ll be reporting on it as soon as information becomes available.

Pokdepinion: While dark mode is great, there are times when I’d rather have it in regular colours. This would be super helpful for that.
