Grab Malaysia has today announced that they’ve partnered up with the Ministry of Transport on introducing their unique Passenger Verification feature.

Grab Malaysia Implements Facial Recognition Technology For First-time Passengers 28

Grab Passenger Verification

With the feature, it enables users to verify their identity on Grab’s app through a live selfie option. New passengers to the platform will be required to take a selfie of themselves through the app as a form of identification. It ensures that pictures taken is an actual ‘live’ human face as well as able to detect and reject inappropriate photos.

User’s selfies will only be used for one-time verification purposes and the company has said that it is protected under Malaysia’s Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA). It will not be displayed as a profile picture or shared with any external parties such as drivers and merchants.

The new update will be rolled out to users in phases over the year as it is built to improve safeguard against crimes.

Pokdepinion: I guess this is a safety measure more for Grab drivers rather than riders. You never know, people could simply create accounts and they might be out for something malicious.
