TikTok Is Being Investigated By Authorities For Security Reasons
ByteDance Technology Co, the parent company of TikTok is being investigated by the US government over their takeover of social media app Musical.ly for a national security review.
According to reports, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, or CFIUS, has said that TikTok did not seek for clearance when they bought over Musical.ly, thus the decision to investigate them.
The acquisition didn’t happen recently, as it took place two years ago. The US government seems to be concerned over how the Chinese company could be censoring sensitive content as well as how they (ByteDance) is storing private data.
A TikTok representative (whose identity is kept anonymous) has said “While we cannot comment on ongoing regulatory processes, TikTok has made clear that we have no higher priority than earning the turst of users and regulators in the US. Part of that effort includes working with Congress and we are committed to doing so“.
The US senator, Marco Rubio tweeted “Any platform owned by a company in China which collects massive amounts of data on Americans is a potential serious threat to our country”.
If you’re not sure on what exactly TikTok is, it is an app that allows users to create and share short videos, which comes with several special effects.
Pokdepinion: I’m not really sure what to make out of this. Is the US too insecure? Or is there something going on behind the scenes? What do you think? Let us know down below.
