Microsoft will apparently be adding DirectStorage to Windows 10 as well. The technology will take advantage of our GPU’s massive compute capabilities to relieve some of the CPU bottleneck in today’s gaming systems, but previously it was reported that Microsoft will be reserving it for the upcoming Windows 11 users, leaving gamers stuck on Windows 10 out of the fun.

DirectStorage will utilize a batched-style submission/completion calling pattern, alleviating the need for apps to manage thousands of individual I/O requests/completion notifications per second. The GPU will also be used to decompress assets directly from the storage, allowing for faster texture loading and streaming, by taking the load off the CPU. This feature will be available later down the line.

Games designed to take advantage of DirectStorage API will be able to enjoy the benefits of the technology on Windows 10 version 1909 or newer, and of course, Windows 11. With that said, Windows 11 touts an upgraded OS storage stack that can take advantage of the full potential of the new tech. Windows 10 will still be able to benefit from the technology, albeit on a legacy OS storage stack.
