Recently, the Wall Street Journal reported on the effects on Instagram having a negative effect on the mental health of teenagers, especially girls. Interestingly, there were claims that Facebook is aware of it.

As a result, Facebook has shot back at them with a new blog post by Vice President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, disputing claims of Facebook ignoring research as “just plain false”. Furthermore, it was added that the news outlet are “cherry-picking” quotes and research.

Relating to the matter, Facebook also addressed on the large amount of COVID-19 misinformation by noting that relevance is being purposely omitted. While Nick Clegg admitted that it is a problem, he believes that Wall Street Journal left out that vaccine hesitancy on the platform has dropped by nearly 50% since the beginning of 2021.

These issues may be too large for one person to handle. Social media has vastly changed how people see the world, and it still requires many years of research before people can truly understand the full effects it has on society. Perhaps then, companies can truly change to bring a much more positive effect for the masses.
