Sony Set to Acquire Anime Streaming Service Crunchyroll

I’m sure many of you have your ways of getting your anime fix online. If you have been relying on Crunchyroll, then this is going to be an interesting piece of news as Sony is set to acquire the major anime streaming service for a huge sum of money.

Sony Acquiring Crunchyroll

According to a report by Nikkei Asia, Sony is currently in the final stages of negotiations to acquire anime streaming service Crunchyroll. The deal is said to be valued at ¥100 billion / USD $957 million / RM3.9 billion. If and when it goes through, the anime streaming service will officially be under Sony.

What could the acquisition mean for consumers? While we don’t expect it to affect subscribers, at least not much, it does mean that Sony will have Funimation and Crunchyroll under them, bolstering their anime offering. The company will also have access to a huge user base, a whole bunch of new titles, and they could possibly look into creating more new anime series or movies, quite possibly both.

With the acquisition, Sony is expected to have an increase in revenue from streaming, competing against the likes of Netflix and Hulu. They could leverage on their own systems, like the upcoming PlayStation 5, to further grow the user base. Whether it will be a successful endeavour or not will be something we’ll have to wait and see.

Pokdepinion: This is quite an interesting business decision, but definitely not even remotely close to bad. I’m curious to see what they have in store after they’ve finalized the deal.
