DisplayPort 2.1 Specification Officially Released by VESA

Superseding DisplayPort 2.0 spec, the DisplayPort 2.1 specification has been officially released by Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). This backwards-compatible display specification is set to be generally more stringent on signaling validations and various features over its preceding DP 2.0 spec, to ensure a more consistent experience across certified peripherals.

Thanks to the collaborative effort in designing various DisplayPort peripherals between VESA and respective device manufacturers, all devices previously certified for DP 2.0 specification will automatically be certified for the DP 2.1 specification as well. In this revision, the efforts are focused on lining up with USB-C’s specification as well as USB4’s PHY (physical layer) to ensure a common communication protocol.

DisplayPort

This specification applies to all DisplayPort form factors, including standard full-size ports and Mini DPs, which in turn is expected to improve signal integrity over longer cable lengths – while maintaining the high-speed UHBR (Ultra-High Bit Rate) standard. DP40 and DP80 UHBR cables, as the name implies, run on 40Gbps and 80Gbps in total, respectively. The maximum cable length for DP40 cable configuration are “beyond two meters” and DP80 is set to “beyond one meter” in that regard, per VESA press release.
